Wellbeing4Learning

Wellbeing4learning is a nature2classroom initiative being piloted in Primary Schools in 2025.

Led by Kirsten Simmons with Lead Researcher Dr Jaimie Wilkie this project focuses on the holistic wellbeing of teachers and children by reframing the school week.

Children will have 4 days with their classroom teacher and 1 day with specialist teachers focused on creative nature education and innovative learning.

Teachers will have a 4 day work week and children will have a 5th day of learning that invigorates their holistic wellbeing.Quote :  Nick Shaw (Principal Waiheke Island School)Wellbeing4Learning looks to address several challenges that we are facing in Aotearoa/New Zealand Primary Schools.

The recruitment and retention of quality teachers is essential to student success, so if we can attract and keep the best teachers then our tamariki will benefit. Being able to offer a 4-day working week is a huge incentive for any workforce, but especially for teachers who carry such a physically, emotionally and mentally draining role.

In addition to this, Wellbeing4Learning is also able to deliver for tamariki by providing them diverse and rich learning experiences outside of the classroom.

By having specialist teachers delivering the arts, nature education, te ao Māori and STEM lessons on the fifth day, students are being exposed to powerful and engaging learning essential to the primary education experience.
